There is a poetry in punishment
By no fault earned, yet felt as discipline,
Dealt out with artistry by one intent
More on her man's submission than his sin,
Dispassionate, she disregards desert;
Lets background-music's rise and fall decide
The force and placement of each measured hurt,
Dictate with what taut tempo it's applied,
Ode-writers are accustomed to constraint:
To count the stresses, to complete the rhyme.
No wonder they accept without complaint
Her harness, sense surrendering's sublime.
Fourteen strict lines a pain-sweet sonnet are
